Stilwell Arts Dancers Shine at State Championship

The dance team of Stilwell School of the Arts has once again proved its excellence by winning the third state title in a row. The talented dancers competed in the Class A-2A division of the GHSA Dance State Championship on Saturday, Feb. 10, 2024, at the Macon Centreplex. They performed in two categories: Jazz and Pom, and scored the highest points in both.

A Remarkable Achievement

The Stilwell dance team, led by coach Jennifer Gordon, has been dominating the Class A-2A division since 2022, when the GHSA sanctioned competitive dance as a sport. The team has won the state title in 2022, 2023, and 2024, making it the only team in its division to achieve this feat. The team consists of 16 dancers, who train hard throughout the year to perfect their routines and skills.

Coach Gordon expressed her pride and joy for her team’s accomplishment. She said, “I am so proud of these dancers. They have worked so hard and overcome so many challenges this year. They have shown dedication, resilience, and passion for their art. They deserve this recognition and I am honored to be their coach.”

A Stunning Performance

The Stilwell dance team impressed the judges and the audience with their stunning performance in both Jazz and Pom categories. In Jazz, the team performed a routine to the song “Adios” by Benjamin Clementine, showcasing their technical ability, musicality, and expression. The team scored 95.23 points out of 100, the highest in their division.

In Pom, the team performed a routine to a medley of songs by Lizzo, featuring energetic moves, sharp transitions, and synchronized formations. The team scored 94.55 points out of 100, again the highest in their division.

The team’s combined score of 189.78 points was enough to secure the state title, beating the runner-up Booker T. Washington by 11.4 points. The team received a trophy, medals, and a banner to celebrate their victory.

A Bright Future

The Stilwell dance team has not only achieved success at the state level, but also at the national level. The team has participated in several prestigious competitions, such as the UDA National Dance Team Championship, the Contest of Champions, and the Dance Worlds. The team has also performed at various events, such as the Atlanta Hawks games, the Atlanta Pride Parade, and the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

The team’s members have also received individual recognition and opportunities, such as scholarships, awards, and invitations to join elite dance programs and companies. Many of the team’s alumni have gone on to pursue careers in dance, education, and entertainment.

The team’s coach, Jennifer Gordon, said that she hopes to continue the team’s legacy of excellence and inspire the next generation of dancers. She said, “I want to thank the Stilwell administration, faculty, staff, parents, and community for their support and encouragement. I also want to thank the GHSA and the other dance teams for their sportsmanship and camaraderie. I look forward to seeing what the future holds for our team and our dancers.”
