In a significant effort to improve pedestrian and cyclist access, Washington University in St. Louis is embarking on a project to replace the Forest Park Parkway bridge. The current bridge, which forms part of the Centennial Greenway, will be replaced with a wider, safer, and more accessible structure. Demolition work on the existing bridge is set to begin on Monday, May 21, with the new bridge expected to open in October.

Northbound cyclists will exit the bridge via a switchback ramp designed to slow their descent. This feature enhances safety and prevents high-speed cycling on the bridge.

Impact and Importance
Approximately 600,000 trips are made across this bridge annually, making it the most heavily traveled section of the Great Rivers Greenway system. The current span, at only 8½ feet, falls short of the recommended width for a joint bike-pedestrian path. The new bridge aims to rectify this deficiency and provide a seamless connection to the Danforth Campus.
Construction Details
During construction, pedestrians will be directed to cross Forest Park Parkway at either Skinker or Big Bend boulevards. Cyclists should follow University Drive west to Big Bend Boulevard and then head south to Forsyth Boulevard. While inconveniences are expected during this period, the long-term benefits will make this entrance one of the safest and most memorable access points to the campus.
