Mark “Swaggy” Lane, a 10-year-old boy from Boston, Massachusetts, had a wish to become a member of the Savannah Bananas, a baseball team in the Coastal Plain League. Lane suffers from a rare neurological condition called KCNQ2 encephalopathy, which causes him to have 200 to 300 seizures a day. Despite his challenges, Lane loves baseball and follows the Savannah Bananas on social media.
Thanks to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Lane’s wish came true on Thursday, August 9, 2023. He traveled with his family from Boston to Savannah, Georgia, where he was welcomed by the Savannah Bananas at Grayson Stadium. He got to hang out with the players, coaches, and staff, and even received his own custom jersey and hat.
A day to remember
Lane had a blast with the Savannah Bananas, who treated him like one of their own. He got to participate in the team’s warm-up exercises, batting practice, and pre-game rituals. He also threw out the first pitch before the game against the Macon Bacon. He was cheered on by the fans, who chanted his name and gave him high-fives.
The Savannah Bananas players said they were thrilled to have Lane as part of the team. Ryan Kellogg, a pitcher for the Bananas, said: “It’s incredible to see the genuine excitement, and just like it being such a special moment for him just makes it that much better for us as well.” Noah Bridges, another player for the Bananas, said: “We just see ourselves as normal dudes who just really care for our fans and for the game of baseball, but when you get to step out and have an opportunity like this, it means the world. It really gives you a good perspective for how much this game and what we do means for kids and gives them inspiration. It is hard to wrap your head around but, but it is really awesome.
A special bond
Lane said he has loved the Savannah Bananas since he saw them on social media. He said he likes their style of play, their fun attitude, and their yellow uniforms. He said he was grateful for the chance to meet his favorite team and fulfill his dream.
The Savannah Bananas said they were honored to host Lane and his family, and that they formed a special bond with him. They said they hope to see him again soon, and that he will always be a Banana in their hearts.
