Suspect set fire to a dumpster near the tracks
Charlotte police have arrested a man who allegedly set fire to a dumpster near the light rail tracks on Saturday night, causing major disruptions to the transit service and traffic in the area.
According to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, officers responded to a call of a dumpster fire near West Morehead Street and South Cedar Street around 9:30 p.m. The fire was close to the light rail tracks, which forced the Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) to suspend service between Carson Station and Scaleybark Station.
Police said they identified the suspect as James Edward Jones, 38, who was seen fleeing from the scene. Officers chased him and took him into custody after a brief struggle. Jones was charged with arson, resisting arrest, assault on a government official and damage to property.
Light rail passengers had to use shuttle buses
The fire also affected the traffic on West Morehead Street, which was closed for several hours as firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze and clear the debris. Police said no injuries were reported from the fire.
CATS said it provided shuttle buses for the light rail passengers who were affected by the service suspension. The agency apologized for the inconvenience and thanked the public for their patience.
CATS said it resumed normal service on Sunday morning after inspecting the tracks and ensuring they were safe for operation.
Arson cases on the rise in Charlotte
The dumpster fire was not an isolated incident, as Charlotte has seen a surge in arson cases in recent months. According to the Charlotte Fire Department, there were 113 arson cases in the first six months of 2023, compared to 77 in the same period last year. That’s an increase of 46.8%.
The fire department said it is working closely with the police department and other agencies to investigate and prevent arson cases in the city. It also urged the public to report any suspicious activity or signs of fire to 911.
The fire department said arson is a serious crime that can cause property damage, injuries and even death. It also affects the environment and the quality of life of the residents. The fire department said anyone who is convicted of arson can face up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $25,000.
