The city may get a damp Independence Day celebration, with weather officials warning of fresh spells of rain starting Thursday.
Hyderabad, Aug. 11 — After several days of intense cloudbursts, Hyderabad saw a break on Sunday, with heavy thunderstorms limited to the city’s northeastern belt. But the relief may be short-lived. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an “orange alert” for heavy rain late Sunday night into Monday morning and is predicting another wet spell from August 14 to 17, potentially affecting Independence Day and Krishna Janmashtami festivities.
Sunday’s Rainfall Snapshot
Moderate rains swept through Kapra, Secunderabad, Alwal, the Cantonment area, Quthbullapur, Uppal, Kukatpally, LB Nagar, Tarnaka and nearby localities. Data from the Telangana Development Planning Society (TGDPS) shows:
-
Uppal: 26.3 mm (highest within GHMC limits)
-
Bahadurpura: 11.5 mm
-
Habsiguda: 3 mm
Beyond the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits, rainfall was heavier:
Location | Rainfall (mm) | District |
---|---|---|
Peerzadiguda | 45.5 | Medchal-Malkajgiri |
Medipally | 30.5 | Medchal-Malkajgiri |
Chevella | 54.3 | Rangareddy |
Shabad | 48 | Rangareddy |
Kothur | 31.5 | Rangareddy |
Earlier on Sunday, light to moderate rains fell from 3:00 pm to 9:30 pm, with isolated heavier bursts in Shamshabad, Balapur, Medipally and Rajendranagar.
Forecast and Weather Pattern
The Hyderabad Rainfall and Flood Alert Agency (HYDRAA) issued a medium-range forecast, suggesting rainfall intensity will ease early this week but scattered moderate showers will continue between Monday and Wednesday.
The Met department’s longer-range model points to renewed rainfall from Thursday through the weekend, driven by a monsoon trough and moisture incursion from the Bay of Bengal. That timing overlaps with Independence Day (Aug. 15) and Krishna Janmashtami (Aug. 16), potentially dampening celebrations.
Why the Orange Alert Matters
An “orange alert” signals the likelihood of heavy rain that could disrupt traffic, trigger waterlogging, and raise the risk of local flooding. Authorities typically advise residents in low-lying areas to remain alert, and festival organizers often scale down outdoor events during such warnings.
Outlook for the Week
-
Aug. 11–13: Scattered moderate rain; localized heavier showers possible in evenings.
-
Aug. 14–17: Widespread rain expected, especially afternoons and nights.
-
Risk Zones: Northeastern GHMC areas, Rangareddy low-lying regions.
The IMD and TGDPS will issue daily updates, but city officials are already advising residents to plan for wet conditions on key holidays.
