Rreal Tacos Expands Again, Opening New Location in Decatur

Decatur, GA — Another Mexican eatery is staking its claim in Decatur as Rreal Tacos prepares to open its doors on February 10. The fast-growing restaurant chain is taking over the former Ponko Chicken space at 312 Church Street, bringing its signature street-style Mexican cuisine to the neighborhood.

A Growing Presence in Metro Atlanta

Rreal Tacos has been expanding at a steady clip. With locations already in Buckhead, West Midtown, Sandy Springs, and Chamblee, the Decatur opening will mark the brand’s eighth metro Atlanta spot. Owners Damian Otero and Miguel Hernandez have been methodical in their approach, positioning Rreal Tacos as a go-to destination for fresh, authentic Mexican flavors.

“This is an exciting milestone for us as we join the dynamic Decatur community,” said Culinary Director Adrian Villarreal in a statement. “The energy here is inspiring, and this location embodies our commitment to bringing authentic Mexican street food and exceptional dining experiences to more neighborhoods in Atlanta.”

Filling a Vacant Space, Stepping Into Competition

The new restaurant is moving into a 3,500-square-foot space that has seen a few changes in recent years. Ponko Chicken opened there in 2020 but struggled to gain traction during the pandemic. Listed for sale in 2022, the restaurant never found a buyer, and the property was left vacant. Before Ponko, the space was home to Steel City Pops, a gourmet popsicle shop that also closed.

Rreal Tacos won’t be the only Mexican option in town. Established players, including Raging Burrito, have already built a loyal customer base in Decatur. In a social media post addressing Ponko’s closure, Raging Burrito acknowledged the incoming competition, writing, “There is a chain Mexican place opening at the location. We appreciate your support since 1996!”

What to Expect at the New Location

Rreal Tacos has built its reputation on fresh, handmade tortillas and an emphasis on traditional recipes from Mexico. The menu features a range of street tacos, sopes, quesadillas, and bowls, with proteins like carne asada, al pastor, and birria drawing a strong following. The restaurant also offers craft cocktails and margaritas, making it a lively option for both casual diners and those looking for a night out.

A few things customers can expect at the new Decatur location:

  • House-made corn and flour tortillas
  • A diverse taco selection, including vegan and vegetarian options
  • Signature cocktails and tequila-based drinks
  • A vibrant, casual atmosphere designed for quick bites or leisurely meals

The chain’s success comes at a time when Atlanta’s food scene is experiencing an influx of new Mexican restaurants, all competing for a slice of the market. But Rreal Tacos has managed to carve out a strong niche with its focus on authenticity and consistency.

Looking Ahead

The restaurant’s expansion highlights the broader trends in metro Atlanta’s dining scene, where demand for high-quality, fast-casual Mexican food remains strong. Decatur, known for its walkable downtown and food-friendly culture, could be an ideal fit for Rreal Tacos’ latest venture.

For those eager to try the new spot, the wait won’t be long—February 10 is just around the corner.
