Georgia Southern University has announced its highly anticipated speakers for the Fall 2024 Commencement ceremonies. Celebrating the achievements of approximately 2,100 graduating students, the events will take place on Dec. 14 in Savannah and Dec. 17 in Statesboro.
Two distinguished alumni, Jerald Mitchell and Bria Janelle, will headline the ceremonies, sharing their remarkable journeys and offering words of wisdom to the graduating class.
Jerald Mitchell: A Leader in Economic Development

Jerald Mitchell, a 1999 graduate of Georgia Southern University, brings a wealth of experience in economic development and innovation to the podium. Over a career spanning nearly two decades, Mitchell has cemented his place as one of Georgia’s most influential leaders, earning a spot on Georgia Trend’s “100 Most Influential Georgians” list for four consecutive years.
As president and CEO of the Greater Columbus Georgia Chamber of Commerce, Mitchell led initiatives that transformed the region’s economic landscape. His efforts centered on external marketing, policy advocacy, and revitalizing underutilized areas, making him a driving force behind the city’s growth.
Mitchell’s earlier roles include serving as vice president of economic development for Atlanta Beltline, Inc., and director of innovation for the Savannah Economic Development Authority. With a background in the communications industry at Comcast NBCUniversal and Time Warner, Mitchell honed his skills in operational transitions and product launches.
Mitchell’s academic credentials include a bachelor’s degree in economics from Georgia Southern and an Executive MBA in International Business from Georgia Tech. He continues to give back through leadership roles on state and regional boards, reflecting his unwavering commitment to community development.
Bria Janelle: A Trailblazer in Sports Media

Bria Janelle, a 2011 graduate of Georgia Southern, is set to captivate the audience with her inspiring journey in sports media and community advocacy. With more than a decade of experience, Janelle has become a prominent voice in the industry, hosting events for major sports organizations, including the NBA, WNBA, and Premier Soccer League.
In 2024, Janelle founded the Bria Janelle Foundation, Inc., focusing on education, inclusivity, and community development. Among her notable initiatives is “Her Shot,” a partnership with PGA REACH Georgia aimed at increasing diversity in golf for young women of color. This program addresses critical gaps in representation, empowering participants with skills and opportunities in a traditionally exclusive sport.
Janelle’s dynamic career as an arena host has brought her to center stage at prestigious events like the NBA All-Star Game, McDonald’s All-American Game, and Jordan Brand Classic. Her work has earned her features in major publications such as Sports Illustrated, USA Today, and Harper’s Bazaar.
As a proud Eagle, Janelle was recognized in Georgia Southern’s “40 Under 40” Class of 2024, an honor that reflects her significant contributions to her field and the broader community.
