UGA Admits Record Number of Early Action Students for 2024

Over 9,500 Students Accepted as University of Georgia Sees Surge in Applications

The University of Georgia (UGA) has once again demonstrated its appeal as a top choice for ambitious students, with over 9,500 students admitted for early action this year. The impressive admissions figures reflect a growing demand for higher education at Georgia’s flagship institution, attracting a diverse group of students from all across the country.

In a year of record-breaking numbers, UGA saw 30,490 students apply for early action consideration—an impressive 14.6% increase from the previous year. Of these applicants, more than 9,500 students received the news that they were accepted, marking another milestone for the university as it continues to attract some of the brightest young minds in the nation.

Surge in In-State and Out-of-State Applications

UGA’s early action process this year demonstrated a significant increase in applications from both in-state and out-of-state students. In-state applications saw a rise of 13%, climbing from 11,500 to 12,860. Out-of-state applications, meanwhile, jumped from around 15,000 to 17,630. This surge in interest underscores UGA’s reputation as an academic powerhouse, not only for Georgia residents but for students from all over the United States.

What’s even more impressive is the diversity of the admitted students. These 9,500 early action admittees come from 50 states and Washington, D.C., as well as from 115 counties across Georgia. It is a reflection of UGA’s broad appeal to students who are looking for a high-quality education in a welcoming and innovative environment.

Competitive Academic Standards

Admission to UGA has always been highly competitive, and this year is no different. The university’s academic standards for early action applicants are notably high. The middle 50% of admitted students reported impressive academic achievements, including a core GPA ranging from 4.17 to 4.40.

Moreover, the ACT scores for the middle 50% of admitted students ranged from 31 to 34, while SAT scores fell between 1400 and 1500. Students applying for early action also demonstrated their commitment to academic rigor by taking an average of 9 to 14 Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), or dual enrollment courses during high school.

UGA President Jere W. Morehead highlighted the university’s commitment to maintaining high academic standards while fostering an environment conducive to success. “The University of Georgia continues to be a top destination for exceptional students, as seen by our record number of applications from Georgia and across the nation,” he said. “Our commitment to academic excellence, innovative programs, and robust student support ensures that UGA remains a place where students come to achieve their highest aspirations.”

Admissions Trends and Outreach Efforts

A closer look at the in-state admissions reveals a notable increase in the number of Georgia high schools represented among the early action admits. This year, admitted in-state students came from 409 high schools—up from 368 the previous year. UGA’s admissions recruitment team worked diligently to visit 311 high schools across Georgia, surpassing last year’s total of 269 visits.

David Graves, UGA’s Director of Undergraduate Admissions, shared his thoughts on the state’s increasing interest in the university. “While getting into the University of Georgia is increasingly competitive due to a wonderful group of applicants, UGA is the state’s flagship institution, and our primary focus is on recruiting, admitting, and enrolling Georgia residents,” Graves explained.

This focus on recruiting in-state talent is evident in the early action admissions statistics. Approximately 42% of Georgia residents who applied early were offered admission, compared to just 23% of out-of-state students.

Two Waves of Early Action Admissions

The admissions process for this year has been split into two distinct waves, with in-state students receiving their decisions first on November 22. Out-of-state students were then notified of their acceptance on December 6. This shift in the process reflects the growing number of applicants and ensures that UGA can continue to manage its admissions effectively while maintaining its commitment to excellence.

For students who were deferred to the regular decision round, hope is not lost. They will still be fully considered for admission alongside new applicants. The regular decision application deadline is January 1, and final admissions decisions are expected to be announced in mid-March. These deferred students are not left out, as UGA continues to ensure that all applicants are given thorough consideration for admission.

Admissions Breakdown: In-State vs. Out-of-State

In light of the large volume of applicants, here’s a breakdown of the early action admissions:
