Engineering Firm to Investigate Fatal Dock Collapse on Sapelo Island

In the wake of a tragic dock collapse on Sapelo Island, Georgia’s attorney general has enlisted the help of an engineering firm to conduct an independent investigation. The incident, which occurred during a celebration for the historic Gullah-Geechee nation, resulted in the deaths of seven individuals, all over the age of 70, and has raised serious concerns about safety protocols and infrastructure on the island.

Details of the Incident

The dock collapse happened on Saturday, October 20, 2024, while approximately 40 people were gathered on the aluminum gangway. As the structure gave way, about 20 individuals fell into the water, many of whom were caught in strong currents. Eyewitness accounts describe a chaotic scene as people struggled to stay afloat.

  • Casualties:
    • Seven fatalities, all seniors.
    • Eight individuals hospitalized, with at least six in critical condition.
    • Two victims remain hospitalized as of Thursday.

The dock, which is operated by Georgia’s Department of Natural Resources, was hosting visitors for the Gullah-Geechee people’s annual Cultural Day festival. This event celebrates the rich history and culture of the Gullah-Geechee community, descendants of enslaved Africans who have maintained their unique heritage.

Ongoing Investigations

In addition to the independent investigation by Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Natural Resources have initiated their own inquiries. These investigations will involve interviewing witnesses and collecting evidence, including a thorough inspection of the collapsed gangway.

Walter Rabon, Commissioner of the Department of Natural Resources, indicated that the investigation could take considerable time. He noted that the gangway had been inspected by Crescent Equipment Co. less than a year ago and again after recent hurricanes, Helene and Milton.

The dock’s operations are critical for the island, which is only accessible by boat and lacks medical facilities. The community of Hogg Hummock, where the festival took place, has been facing challenges related to gentrification and rising taxes, prompting many Gullah-Geechee members to relocate in search of better opportunities.

Community Response and Safety Concerns

The tragic event has sparked outrage among families of the victims, who believe the incident was preventable. Grieving relatives have expressed their concerns about the safety of the dock and the adequacy of inspections conducted prior to the collapse.

Eyewitness videos captured the frantic moments following the incident, highlighting the urgent need for improved safety measures. The community is now calling for accountability and a thorough review of safety protocols to prevent such tragedies in the future.

As investigations continue, the focus remains on understanding the circumstances that led to this devastating event and ensuring that the Gullah-Geechee community can celebrate their heritage safely in the future.
