Television actor Sanchita Ugale, best known for her role as Diya Tandon in the Zee TV serial Kumkum Bhagya, has died at the age of 22. She was found dead at her home in the Nalasopara area of Maharashtra’s Palghar district on the evening of Sunday, June 14, police and multiple news reports said. Achole police have registered a case of accidental death. No suicide note was recovered at the scene.
The Scene in Nalasopara
Police were alerted to the Sai Santoshi Building in Achole village, Nalasopara East, on the evening of June 14. She was found hanging from a ceiling fan in her bedroom using a saree, the room locked from the inside, officials told reporters. Family members rushed her to a Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation hospital, where doctors declared her dead on arrival.
Assistant Police Inspector Vinod Bagh of Achole Police Station said the incident took place between 7 pm and 7.30 pm on June 14. On June 15, based on a complaint filed by her father, Machhindra Ugale, the Achole police registered an Accidental Death Report (ADR) under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). Police say they are working to determine a motive. The case is now with the Achole police.
Her father has told police he does not suspect foul play or hold anyone responsible. “A police team inspected the scene immediately after being alerted about the incident. We did not find anything suspicious at the spot, and no suicide note was recovered,” a police official told PTI. The body has been sent to a government hospital for a postmortem examination.
A Career That Spanned Television and Film
Sanchita’s most prominent role was Diya Tandon in the Zee TV drama Kumkum Bhagya, a part the Times of India said had ‘significantly boosted her visibility in the industry.’ She had earlier spoken publicly about how landing the role was a turning point in her career, and was also known for playing Ruchita Jaitley in SAB TV’s Wagle Ki Duniya and the lead role of Sukoon in Dangal TV’s Dilwali Dulha Le Jayegi, opposite actor Sorab Bedi.
Her work extended to films and OTT projects. She played Tarabai in the Vicky Kaushal-starrer historical drama Chhaava, a film based on the life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. She also appeared in Manoj Bajpayee’s investigative thriller Silence 2: The Night Owl Bar Shootout, and in the series Crime Aaj Kal. In an interview with the Times of India, Sanchita had said: ‘I have a huge respect for TV, and this is a platform that is fair to all. It only demands talent and hard work; no shortcuts here.’

Hours Before, an Instagram Reel
Hours before her death was reported, Sanchita had shared an Instagram reel in which she was seen lip-syncing to the classic Hindi song Dafli Wale Dafli Baja, dressed in a peach-pink traditional outfit. Indian Express reported the post showed her ‘singing along’ the track. The Deccan Herald and other outlets identified the same song. The Times of India described her in the clip as ‘happy and chirpy.’ The clip spread quickly.
Among the comments, Pandya Store actress Simran Budharup wrote ‘Why Sanchita?’ with a crying emoji, according to Indian Express. The Times of India noted that the post ‘appeared like any other update from the actress.’ The contrast between the cheerful clip and the news of her death has been repeatedly noted by fans and is now part of the public record of her final hours.
The reel is one of the few artefacts now in public circulation from her final hours. Many social media users have commented that she looked happy and energetic in the post, making the news harder to process. The post has since circulated widely outside her own followers, carried by news outlets and fan pages. The Instagram reel Sanchita posted hours before her death continues to draw emotional reactions days after news of her death broke.
Colleagues Reveal Months of Depression
A close friend and colleague, actor Megha Sharma, told Money Control that Sanchita had been undergoing treatment for depression since January 2026. The interview was published the same day news of her death broke. Sharma said Sanchita had, in recent weeks, expressed thoughts of suicide to her close circle.
But this time we could not save her. She loved herself.
Sharma, Sanchita’s friend and co-star, told Money Control that the late actress had been taken by her to an audition ten days before her death. ‘I met her 10 days ago and took her for an audition. She was convinced that she could make it,’ Sharma said. She added that Sanchita had often said she would end her life, and that family and friends had tried to keep her positive. ‘She often said that she will end her life and we all including her mother and family motivated her to stay positive and not think about such negative things,’ Sharma said.
Co-star Richa Soni, who worked with Sanchita on Dilwali Dulha Le Jayegi, told the Times of India that she learnt of the death through a phone call from the actress who played the grandmother in another show Sanchita was working on. ‘We had worked closely together. I knew her personally. I simply couldn’t believe it,’ Soni said. Soni did not say more.
Actress Aanchal Khurana used the news to publicly criticize working conditions in the television industry, posting on social media about the pressures actors face behind the glamour. Khurana, who said she has herself gone through periods of depression and stress, alleged that actors can be replaced over small disagreements, financial considerations, or refusals to compromise. She said that while channels chase TRPs, producers cut costs, and audiences seek entertainment, few people consider the challenges actors endure. Khurana urged those struggling to step away from the pressure and return to their loved ones.
An Industry Body Calls for a Probe and Reforms
The All Indian Cine Workers Association (AICWA) has urged the Maharashtra government to order a thorough investigation and to examine the broader issue of mental health challenges in the entertainment industry. AICWA president Suresh Shyamlal Gupta said every possible angle must be investigated before any conclusions are drawn. The Deccan Herald reported the association’s statement in detail.
‘In recent years, the Indian entertainment industry has witnessed several deaths and alleged suicide cases,’ Gupta said. ‘In many instances, questions raised by family members, colleagues and the public have remained unanswered.’ ‘Therefore, it is essential that investigators examine all available evidence, circumstances and possible angles in this case with complete transparency,’ he added. Gupta said the family of Sanchita Ugale ‘deserves nothing less than a fair, impartial and thorough investigation.’
Gupta also called for institutional mechanisms to address mental health concerns among actors, technicians and other entertainment industry professionals. The Deccan Herald noted that the association’s statement came as multiple film industry bodies have, in recent months, pressed the state government to set up a dedicated committee to examine the rise in deaths and mental health-related crises in the sector. ‘Every life is precious,’ Gupta said in the statement.
What Investigators Are Still Determining
Police have confirmed that all aspects of the case are under investigation, including personal and professional angles. ‘The reason for the death will be determined during the investigation. Further action will be taken accordingly. Nothing suspicious has been found so far. Her father has stated that he has no complaint against anyone,’ API Vinod Bagh told reporters. Authorities have said investigators are reviewing her recent communications and social media activity as part of the probe. The Economic Times reported that investigators are also speaking with people close to her.
Sanchita’s body was sent to a government hospital for a postmortem. The Achole police have not publicly announced a confirmed motive, and no suicide note has been found at the scene. The case remains open.
