Tbilisi, Georgia – The Tbilisi City Hall has announced that the rehabilitation of Akaki Tsereteli Avenue in Didube district is at the last stage and traffic will be restored soon. The avenue, which is one of the main arteries of the city, has been closed for several months due to road works.
What are the benefits of the rehabilitation?
The rehabilitation of Tsereteli Avenue aims to improve the safety, comfort and aesthetics of the road. According to the press service of the Tbilisi City Hall, some of the benefits include:
- Widening and levelinging of lanes
- Installation of underground communications
- Reconstruction of sidewalks and crosswalks
- Beautification of landscaping and lighting
- Removal of encroachments and illegal constructions
The project also involves the renovation of Shota Shalikashvili Bridge, which connects Tsereteli Avenue with Didube district. The bridge was damaged by an earthquake in 2004 and has been undergoing repairs since then.
How long will it take to complete?
The city hall said that despite the extension of the contract with the contractors, the avenue will be fully opened for traffic at the end of January 2024. However, some parts of Eristavi Street are still under construction and may cause temporary disruptions.
The city hall also urged drivers to follow traffic rules and regulations during this period and to use alternative routes if necessary. The city hall said that it will monitor the situation closely and provide updates on its website.
What are other projects in progress?
Tsereteli Avenue is not only undergoing rehabilitation, but also expansion. The city hall has launched a project to build a new section between Didube district and Rustavi district, which will increase its length from 2.5 km to 3 km. The project is expected to be completed by 2025.
Another project in progress is the reconstruction of Vazha-Pshavela Avenue, which is another major road in Tbilisi. The project aims to improve its infrastructure, connectivity and attractiveness. The project started in 2019 and is scheduled to finish by 2023.
These projects are part of Tbilisi’s efforts to modernize its urban transport system and enhance its quality of life.
