Former President Donald Trump made a bizarre and unfounded accusation against Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, who is investigating his attempts to overturn the 2020 election results in Georgia. Trump claimed that Willis had an affair with a gang member she was prosecuting, during a rally in Windham, New Hampshire, on Tuesday.
“They say there’s a young woman — a young racist in Atlanta — they say she was after a certain gang and she ended up having an affair with the head of the gang or a gang member. And this is a person who wants to indict me […] wants to indict me for a perfect phone call,” Trump told his supporters.
There is no evidence to support Trump’s allegation, which appears to be based on a distorted interpretation of a Rolling Stone article from January. The article featured an interview with rapper YSL Mondo, who co-founded the Young Stoner Life (YSL) music label with Young Thug. Willis represented Mondo in a 2019 aggravated assault case, and later prosecuted Young Thug and 13 other defendants in a RICO case alleging that YSL was a criminal gang.
Willis is expected to announce indictment against Trump soon
Willis has empaneled a grand jury to investigate Trump and his allies’ efforts to interfere with Georgia’s 2020 election outcome, including his infamous phone call to Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, in which he pressured him to “find” enough votes to flip the state in his favor. Trump’s call could violate state laws against solicitation of election fraud, conspiracy, racketeering, and making false statements.
Willis is expected to announce whether she will indict Trump in the coming weeks, according to sources familiar with the probe. She has also requested documents and recordings from Raffensperger’s office, as well as from former U.S. Attorney Byung J. Pak and former acting U.S. Attorney Bobby Christine, who were both pressured by Trump to investigate his baseless claims of voter fraud.
Trump attacks Willis as part of his “fraud squad”
Trump has repeatedly tried to discredit prosecutors who are investigating him, including Willis, whom he has labeled as part of his “fraud squad” of Democratic district attorneys who are allegedly targeting him for political reasons. He has also accused President Joe Biden of being behind the investigations, and claimed that they are part of a “witch hunt” against him.
On Friday, Trump posted a video on Truth Social, his new social media platform, painting Willis as a member of a “fraud squad” of prosecutors under the command of Biden. The video featured the headline of Rolling Stone’s interview with Mondo, and claimed that Willis “got caught hiding a relationship with a gang member she was prosecuting.”
However, Mondo did not say that he had any relationship with Willis beyond that of attorney and client, nor did he accuse her of trying to hide their relationship. He also expressed surprise at her prosecution of YSL, saying that it was not in line with her character and that there must be some political pressure behind it.
