A devastating crash in Troup County early Sunday morning left four people dead and another seriously injured, according to the Georgia State Patrol (GSP). Authorities said the wreck happened just after midnight at the intersection of GA-1 and Wares Cross Road.
Collision at Red Light Turns Fatal
Investigators say a Nissan Altima traveling west on Wares Cross Road ran a red light. A GMC Sierra 2500, heading north on GA-1, slammed into the Nissan’s left side. The impact sent the Altima spinning multiple times before coming to a rest.
One backseat passenger, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the car. GSP confirmed that all four occupants of the Nissan died at the scene.
The driver of the GMC sustained serious injuries and was transported to WellStar West Georgia Medical Center. Their condition remains unknown.
Victims Identified as LaGrange Residents
The Troup County Coroner’s Office confirmed that the victims were all from LaGrange, Georgia, ranging in age from 23 to 33. Their names have not yet been released, pending notification of their families.
Investigation Ongoing
GSP troopers are still piecing together details of the crash, but preliminary findings suggest that running the red light was the key factor. Investigators will also look into possible contributing factors such as speed, impairment, or distracted driving.
Meanwhile, authorities urge all drivers to obey traffic signals and wear seat belts, as these precautions can significantly reduce the risk of fatalities in crashes.
Fatal Crashes a Growing Concern in Georgia
Traffic fatalities remain a major issue across Georgia. According to the Georgia Department of Transportation, over 1,800 people lost their lives in crashes statewide in 2023. Red-light violations and failure to wear seat belts continue to be leading factors in these deaths.
With this latest tragedy, officials remind drivers of the importance of defensive driving and adhering to traffic laws to prevent further loss of life.
