A homeowner in Highland’s Square, a neighborhood in the Pooler/Port Wentworth area, is frustrated with the City of Savannah water company for leaving a leaky pipe and a hole in his yard for almost two years.
High water bill and leaky pipe
Anthony Robles moved into his brand-new home in Highland’s Square in 2021. He soon noticed that his water bill was extremely high, and contacted the City of Savannah to find out the reason. The city told him that the bill was high due to a leak on their end, and promised to fix it.
However, when the city came to repair the pipe, they only dug a hole and left it there, without fixing the leak or filling the hole. Robles says that he has tried to contact them several times since then, but he always gets the same runaround.
“I’ve never seen this part of the house dry ever even when it hasn’t rained for weeks it’s never been dry because that pipe is still leaking,” Robles said.
Safety and aesthetic concerns
Robles is not only worried about the appearance of the leak, but also about the safety of his family and neighborhood. He says that his kids have to play on the street because the yard is always wet, and that there have been people who have fallen in the hole at night while walking their dogs.
He also says that the leak has caused damage to his foundation and driveway, and that he is afraid of what will happen if a storm comes and floods his property.
“My house is going to be underwater if we get a hurricane or something like that because this whole area is going to be flooded,” Robles said.
City of Savannah responds
WSAV-TV contacted the City of Savannah and asked them about the situation. The city said that they are aware of the problem and that they have dispatched crews to Robles’ residence to assess the damage and take action.
The city also said that they apologize for any inconvenience caused by the leak and that they will work with Robles to resolve the issue as soon as possible.
“We are committed to providing quality service to our customers and we appreciate their patience as we work to fix this problem,” a spokesperson for the city said.
