Nikon has recently announced the launch of its new full-frame mirrorless camera, the Zf, which combines the classic design of the Nikon FM2 film camera with the latest technology of the Z series. The Zf is a camera that appeals to both nostalgic and modern photographers, offering a heritage aesthetic and advanced performance.
A Timeless Design Inspired by the FM2
The Zf is a tribute to the iconic Nikon FM2, a 35mm SLR film camera that was popular in the 1980s. The Zf features a magnesium-alloy body with a glossy finish, brass dials, shutter-release button, and power switch, and a Nikon logo from the 1970s-80s. The camera also has carved letters and numbers on the top, giving it a refined look and feel.
The Zf allows users to customize their camera with six different colors of artificial leather*, which adds to the retro charm. The grip is designed to balance the appearance and stability of the camera, while the shutter-release button has been carefully crafted to provide a satisfying feel. The Zf also has a dedicated B&W position on the photo/video selector, which enables quick switching to black-and-white photo mode.
A Full-Frame Sensor and EXPEED 7 Processor for High-Quality Images
The Zf is equipped with a 24.5-megapixel full-frame backside-illuminated CMOS image sensor and the same EXPEED 7 image-processing engine as the flagship Z9. This combination enables the Zf to deliver high-resolution images with low noise and rich colors, even in low-light situations. The Zf also has an increased native ISO range of 100-64,000, compared to the Z6 II’s 100-51,200.
The Zf also features a new pixel-shift shooting mode, which supports the creation of 96-megapixel photos by merging multiple NEF (RAW) files. This mode is ideal for capturing fine details and textures in still subjects, such as landscapes and architecture. The Zf is the first Nikon camera to support this feature.
A Variety of Functions for Creative Expression
The Zf offers a range of functions that allow users to explore their creativity and style. In addition to the conventional Monochrome Picture Control, the Zf has two new options: Flat Monochrome and Deep Tone Monochrome, each with unique tone characteristics. The Zf also has Creative Picture Controls, which enable more artistic imaging expression with various effects and filters.
The Zf also has impressive video performance that meets diverse production needs. The camera can record 4K UHD video at up to 60p, with full-pixel readout and 10-bit output via HDMI. The camera also supports N-Log, HLG, and HDR (HLG) modes for enhanced dynamic range and color grading flexibility. The Zf also has a vari-angle LCD monitor that can be tilted and rotated for convenient shooting from various angles.
The Zf is compatible with the Nikon Z mount system, which offers a wide selection of lenses for different genres and scenes. The Z mount has a large diameter and short flange distance, which enables superior optical performance and light transmission. The Zf can also use F-mount lenses via an optional adapter, expanding the possibilities for image creation.
