A tragic shooting unfolded outside the Honduran Consulate near Atlanta on Monday afternoon, leaving one security guard dead and another individual injured. Police have arrested a suspect and believe there is no ongoing threat to public safety.
Gunfire Erupts Outside the Consulate
The incident occurred at the Consulate General of Honduras, located at 6755 Peachtree Industrial Boulevard in Doraville, Georgia, about 16 miles northeast of Atlanta. According to officials, the suspect attempted to enter the consulate building with a weapon but was stopped by security.
Foreign Minister Eduardo Enrique Reina of Honduras confirmed that the guard who lost his life was of Mexican nationality and worked for a private security company. The injured individual, whose identity has not been released, was transported to a hospital and is in stable condition.
Calls reporting gunshots came in around 2:30 p.m., prompting a swift response from the Doraville Police Department.
Suspect in Custody
The suspect, believed to be of Honduran nationality, was apprehended at the scene. Investigators are confident that the shooter acted alone. The police have not yet disclosed the names of the victims or the suspect, nor have they confirmed a motive for the attack.
Emily Heenan, spokesperson for the city of Doraville, assured the public that there are no additional threats.
