Northeast Georgia History Center welcomes homeschoolers for a day of learning and fun

The Northeast Georgia History Center is hosting its first Homeschool Day of the school year on Thursday, August 24, 2023. The event will feature presentations, demonstrations, and activities related to the founding of the Georgia colony.

Meet the founders of Georgia

Homeschoolers will have the opportunity to meet General James Oglethorpe and Mary Musgrove, two of the most influential figures in the early history of Georgia. Oglethorpe was the founder and governor of the colony, and Musgrove was a Creek Indian woman who served as his interpreter and mediator. They will be portrayed by professional living history interpreters who will share their stories and answer questions from the audience. Oglethorpe will start the event with a program at 10 AM, and Musgrove will greet audiences with a program at 12 PM.

Experience the colonial life

Homeschoolers will also get to explore the everyday lives of the colonists and the Creek Indians through various activity stations and demonstrations. Some of the highlights include:

  • A live blacksmithing demonstration, where visitors can see how metal tools and weapons were made in the colonial era.
  • A kid-friendly loom weaving activity, where visitors can learn how to weave cloth from wool and cotton.
  • A religious life station, where visitors can learn about the different faiths and missions that existed in the colony, such as Anglicanism, Methodism, Judaism, and Moravianism.
  • A trading post station, where visitors can make a trade with Mary Musgrove and learn about the items that were exchanged between the colonists and the Creek tribes, such as beads, blankets, guns, and rum.
  • An open-fire cooking demonstration, where visitors can see how food was prepared and preserved in the colonial era, such as cornbread, stew, and jerky.
  • A kids scavenger hunt in the exhibits, where visitors can discover historical artifacts and facts related to the founding of Georgia.
