Amidst the picturesque landscapes of the South Caucasus, Georgia’s energy sector has been buzzing with activity. In May 2024, the nation’s electricity export surged by an impressive 16.5%. This boost in exports has significant implications for the region and the global energy market.
Export Destinations
Three countries stood out as major recipients of Georgia’s electricity during this period:
- Turkey – The largest export destination, Turkey received a staggering $12.95 million worth of Georgian electricity.
- Armenia – Our neighboring country benefited from $1.6 million worth of electricity exports.
- Azerbaijan – The energy flow extended to Azerbaijan as well, with exports totaling $503 thousand.
The Bigger Picture
As Georgia continues to harness its hydropower potential, these export figures underscore the country’s role as an emerging energy player. The delicate balance between meeting domestic demand and contributing to regional stability remains a priority for policymakers.
