Free Dental Services for Kids at Clayton State University

Clayton State University is celebrating its 50th anniversary of its Dental Hygiene Clinic by offering free dental services to children in the community. The clinic, which provides oral care and education to residents of all ages, is hosting a special week of service from February 19 to February 23, 2024.

A Week of Service for Children’s Dental Health Month

February is National Children’s Dental Health Month, a campaign that aims to raise awareness and promote good oral health habits among children and their families. To support this cause, Clayton State University’s Dental Hygiene Clinic is inviting children to receive various dental services at no cost. These services include:

  • Oral health screenings
  • Dental x-rays
  • Cleanings
  • Fluoride treatment
  • Sealants
  • Nutritional counseling

The clinic hopes to reach out to children who may not have access to regular dental care or insurance, and to prevent dental problems such as cavities and gum disease. Heather Eddy, an assistant professor in the university’s dental hygiene program, said that the week of service is a “very rewarding experience” to give back and help serve the community, especially those who are underserved.

A Learning Facility for Dental Hygiene Students

The Dental Hygiene Clinic is not only a place of service, but also a place of learning. The clinic is staffed by junior and senior dental hygiene students, who treat patients under the supervision of dental hygiene faculty members. The students gain practical experience and skills by providing oral care and education to a diverse population of patients.

Brandi Clisham, the clinic manager, said that the clinic is a “prestigious” school for dental hygiene, and that the students are eager to serve the area’s children during their visits to campus. She also expressed gratitude to Patterson Dental, a company that donates all the supplies and equipment that the clinic uses.

How to Make an Appointment

The clinic is open to children of all ages, and no dental insurance is required. Parents or guardians can make an appointment online or by calling the clinic directly. The clinic hours vary from semester to semester, but the current schedule is as follows:

  • Fall Semester: Monday, Wednesday, Friday 8 a.m. and 1 p.m.
