Sports Minister Shalva Gogoladze, along with Olympic Committee President Leri Khabelov and Bakuriani 2025 Organizing Committee Chair Mamuka Khabaresheli, were present to welcome the flame. The flame had been ignited in Rome’s iconic Mercati di Traiano before being carried across the continent by Lasha Bekauri, a two-time Olympic judo champion. Bekauri, a symbol of Georgia’s sporting prowess, played an essential role in transporting the flame, which will now journey through various regions of Georgia, igniting excitement and anticipation for the upcoming festival.
The event is poised to make history as Georgia becomes the eighth European nation to host both the Summer and Winter European Youth Olympic Festivals. The 2025 Winter edition in Bakuriani will bring together up to 2,000 young athletes from 48 European countries, each aiming to showcase their talents and compete at the highest level in winter sports.
For Georgia, the Peace Flame signifies more than just an event; it represents a celebration of unity, sportsmanship, and international camaraderie. As the flame travels across the country, it not only builds anticipation but also fosters a spirit of togetherness among the Georgian people, who will have the unique opportunity to participate in and witness this historic event firsthand.
With the games just around the corner, Bakuriani is preparing to welcome the athletes and visitors from across Europe, showcasing the country’s commitment to fostering international relations through sport. The festival promises to bring an exciting array of winter sports, underscoring the importance of youth development and the power of sport in promoting peace and solidarity.
