Veterans’ Thrift Store Funds Entire Middle Georgia Honor Flight

At the Eatonton Veterans Thrift Store, a remarkable act of generosity is making waves. A group of about a dozen veterans will soon embark on a free honor flight to Washington D.C., where they’ll have the chance to visit the war memorials dedicated to their service. But what makes this story truly heartwarming is the source of this funding: the thrift store itself.

A Unique Mission: Veterans Helping Veterans

The thrift store, founded by the Eatonton VFW Post 6686, goes beyond selling clothes, furniture, and toys. It’s a place where veterans come together to support their fellow servicemembers. David Hastings, a Vietnam War veteran, emphasizes the sense of purpose: “It makes us feel productive too when we come back here and help out and do good for our community.”

John Betancourt, a board member of the thrift store, is passionate about ensuring that all veterans get the opportunity to see the war memorials in Washington D.C. He explains, “I have some of my hometown kids I grew up with that are on that wall. Just going there is—it brings tears to your eyes.” Betancourt himself experienced an honor flight last year, surrounded by fellow Vietnam veterans. “What Washington has done, what the United States had done for memorials, it’s amazing,” he reflects. “You have to experience it. You have to go there and see it.”

A Surprise Donation with a Lasting Impact

Thanks to a $20,000 donation from the thrift store, the Middle Georgia Honor Flight will be able to fund an entire flight. Jeanette Wall, the Executive Director of Middle Georgia Honor Flight, expresses her excitement: “Such a surprise, and you know very much needed. And we’re so excited.” The cost of an honor flight is approximately $15,000, but this donation goes above and beyond, ensuring that more veterans can participate in this meaningful journey.
