A memorable day for the Bulls and the Olympians
The USF Football team had a special guest on their last day of fall camp on Saturday, August 22, 2023. They welcomed 40 boys and girls of the Special Olympics to run a play and score a touchdown with the Bulls. For the first time, the Olympians got to experience the thrill of playing on the field with the college athletes.
The event was organized by Head Coach Alex Golesh, who said it was his favorite night of the year. Golesh is a former special education teacher and he wanted to give back to the community and inspire his players. He said he plans to put on the event every year.
The Bulls players were also excited to share their passion for football with the Olympians. They cheered them on, high-fived them, and celebrated with them after each touchdown. Some of the players said it was an eye-opening experience and they were glad to make a difference.
A positive end to a challenging camp
The event also marked the end of a grueling fall camp for the Bulls, who are preparing for their first game of the season on September 2 against Western Kentucky. The team had to endure long practices, intense workouts, and tough competition for starting spots.
Golesh said he was proud of how his team handled the camp and improved every day. He said he saw a lot of growth and development from his players, especially from the newcomers and freshmen. He also praised his coaching staff for their hard work and dedication.
The Bulls are hoping to bounce back from a disappointing 2022 season, where they finished with a 4-8 record and missed out on a bowl game. They are also looking to make a statement in the American Athletic Conference, where they are projected to finish near the bottom.
A new era for USF Football
The 2023 season will be the first one under Golesh, who was hired in December 2022 after former coach Charlie Strong was fired. Golesh is a young and energetic coach who has a proven track record as an offensive coordinator at Iowa State and Tennessee.
Golesh has brought in a new system, a new culture, and a new attitude to USF Football. He has emphasized accountability, discipline, and teamwork among his players. He has also injected some fun and creativity into his offense, which features multiple formations, motions, and tempo changes.
Golesh has also recruited well, bringing in some talented transfers and freshmen who can make an immediate impact. He has also retained some key veterans who can provide leadership and stability. He has said that he wants to build USF Football into a consistent winner and a contender in the AAC.
