UGA Dining Services Rolls Out New Contactless Entry System

The University of Georgia (UGA) is set to make dining on campus more efficient with a new, contactless entry system rolling out this spring. Starting in 2025, students will experience faster, smoother access to dining halls, the Ramsey Student Center, and the UGA OneCard Office with the introduction of the MorphoWave Entry System.

A Faster, Streamlined Entry Process for UGA Students

At peak dining hours, lines at UGA’s popular dining spots often extend outside, causing delays for students trying to grab a bite. Recognizing the need for a quicker, more efficient way to get students through the doors, UGA Dining Services is introducing the MorphoWave Entry System, which will be fully implemented by fall 2025.

The new system aims to reduce wait times by allowing students to enter dining venues with a simple wave of their hand. According to Taylor West, the communication manager for Auxiliary Services, the system will eliminate the need for lengthy queues, especially during busy hours, ensuring students spend less time in line and more time enjoying their meals.

“At peak times of service, queues can extend outside of the dining commons, and a quicker method of entry can help reduce lines and the time that a customer is in line,” West said in a statement.

The MorphoWave system uses biometric points, which are scanned from a student’s hand to identify them. These biometric markers are then linked to their student identification number, creating a personalized, quick entry method. UGA claims that students’ privacy is maintained because the system cannot connect these biometric points back to a specific fingerprint.

Enrollment and Privacy Concerns: Students Have Options

Students who want to use the new system can begin enrolling throughout the spring semester at Bolton Dining Commons and Village Summit. For those who prefer not to use the biometric entry system, there’s still the option to enter the traditional way with their OneCard.

Freshman Annie Marks, who has already enrolled in the new system, praised its speed and convenience. “I really like it because I think that it’s way faster than the eye scanner,” she said. Marks mentioned that for shorter individuals like herself, the previous eye scanner was difficult to use. The MorphoWave system, on the other hand, works effortlessly for everyone, making it a more inclusive option.

Future Plans: More Than Just Dining Halls

The MorphoWave Entry System is not just a solution for today—it’s also a part of the larger plan for the upcoming Dining, Learning, and Well-Being Center set to open in 2026. By implementing this system now, UGA is preparing for a seamless transition when the new building opens, allowing students to continue their dining experience without interruptions.

With the system being tested at existing dining locations, the transition will hopefully be smooth when the new center debuts. As UGA continues to innovate with student services, this entry system stands as a small but significant step toward improving daily life on campus.
