Tsereteli Avenue, one of the main thoroughfares in Tbilisi, is undergoing a major rehabilitation project that aims to improve its infrastructure, appearance, and safety. The Tbilisi City Hall has signed contracts with four companies that will carry out the works, which are expected to be completed by the end of January 2024.
Why Tsereteli Avenue Needs Rehabilitation
Tsereteli Avenue is a vital artery of the city, connecting the central and western districts of Tbilisi. It is also a busy commercial and residential area, with many shops, cafes, offices, and apartments lining the street. However, the avenue suffers from poor road conditions, traffic congestion, outdated utilities, and lack of green spaces. These problems affect the quality of life of the residents, commuters, and visitors, as well as the attractiveness of the city.
The rehabilitation project aims to address these issues by reconstructing the road surface, sidewalks, drainage system, lighting, and landscaping. The project also intends to create more space for pedestrians, cyclists, and public transport, and to enhance the aesthetic and historical value of the avenue. The project is part of the larger urban development plan of the Tbilisi City Hall, which seeks to modernize and beautify the city.
Who Are the Contractors and What Are Their Responsibilities
The Tbilisi City Hall has selected four companies to continue the rehabilitation works on Tsereteli Avenue, after terminating the contracts with the previous contractors due to their irresponsible attitude and poor performance. The four companies are:
- Enco: a leading construction company in Georgia, with experience in building roads, bridges, tunnels, and other infrastructure projects. Enco will be responsible for the road reconstruction and drainage system on Tsereteli Avenue.
- Parma: a diversified company that operates in various sectors, including construction, energy, and tourism. Parma will be in charge of the sidewalks and landscaping on Tsereteli Avenue.
- Geo Group: a group of companies that specialize in engineering, construction, and consulting services. Geo Group will handle the lighting and electrical works on Tsereteli Avenue.
- Black Sea Group: a group of companies that focus on real estate development, construction, and hospitality. Black Sea Group will take care of the architectural and historical preservation on Tsereteli Avenue.
The Tbilisi City Hall has signed contracts with these four companies, and they have already started the rehabilitation works. The City Hall has also stated that it will monitor the progress and quality of the works closely, and that it will not tolerate any delays or violations.
When Will the Rehabilitation Be Completed and What Will Be the Benefits
The rehabilitation project of Tsereteli Avenue is expected to be completed by the end of January 2024, according to the Tbilisi City Hall. The project has a total budget of 17.7 million GEL (about 5.3 million USD), and it covers a stretch of 2.3 kilometers of the avenue.
The project will bring many benefits to the city and its people, such as:
- Improved road safety and traffic flow, by repairing the damaged road surface, installing new traffic lights and signs, and creating dedicated lanes for buses and bicycles.
- Enhanced pedestrian and cyclist comfort and accessibility, by widening and paving the sidewalks, adding benches and trash bins, and planting trees and flowers.
- Upgraded utility services and environmental protection, by replacing the old and leaking pipes, installing energy-efficient LED lights, and improving the stormwater drainage system.
- Increased aesthetic and historical appeal, by restoring the original facades and ornaments of the buildings, preserving the cultural and architectural heritage of the avenue, and adding artistic elements and sculptures.
The rehabilitation of Tsereteli Avenue will transform the avenue into a modern and attractive urban space, that will improve the living standards of the residents, attract more visitors and investors, and showcase the beauty and identity of Tbilisi.
