South Korea’s First Floating Airport: Busan is the second-largest city in South Korea. The government of the country plans to complete the construction of a floating airport in the port city by 2025. The project is estimated to cost $10.97 billion.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport of the South Korean government, it has been reported that 5 locations in the Kadok Island area have been considered for the establishment of a floating airport. It has been decided to build a new international airport on the island of Busan, the largest of the 5 locations.
This area is considered to be noise pollution-free. And it is said that due to its proximity to the nearby Gimhae and Jinhae airports, there will be no flight crisis.
About 3,500 meters of the runway:
It is planned to build a runway at a distance of about 3,500 meters here, which will be a floating airport in the sea. This year, the South Korean government plans to conduct an environmental protection study and subsequently prepare a detailed construction plan report for the project.
The floating airport is scheduled to be completed by 2025, followed by the opening of the airport to public use by 2035.
How many passengers and how much cargo can it handle?
According to the South Korean government, the study revealed that the airport, which will be located on the sea, can handle 23.36 million passengers and 2,86,000 tons of cargo by 2065.
Objection to the project:
Critics say the plan to set up a floating airport is not economically viable. Moreover, it is also suggested that it will seriously affect the environment. On the other hand, it is alleged that the project has been delayed for more than a year.
In particular, Yeon Sook-Yeol, who is running for the next presidential election in South Korea, is going to carry out the election campaign by emphasizing that the airport works should be completed quickly. As a result, the current President Moon Jae-in has ordered the authorities to quickly complete the international airport work at Kedok.
