Six Special Olympics Athletes Inducted into Kansas Hall of Fame

A Night of Celebration and Recognition

On Saturday, November 13, 2023, six Special Olympics athletes were honored for their achievements and contributions to the movement at the first-ever Victory Gala, benefitting Special Olympics Kansas. The event was held at the Hyatt Regency Wichita and featured a silent auction, live entertainment, and a keynote speech by John Lair, the CEO and President of Special Olympics Kansas.

The six athletes who were inducted into the Kansas Hall of Fame are Aubrey Cauley, Shannon Hardin, Melissa Hylton, David Payne, Rex West, and Linda Heine. They join the current 219 Hall of Fame members who have been recognized since 1981 for their dedication, sportsmanship, and leadership.

  • Aubrey Cauley has been involved with Special Olympics for 30 years. He participates in bowling, track and field, and basketball and spends hours practicing for each sport. He is a local celebrity in Pittsburg, Kansas, for his advocacy for Special Olympics and his public speaking skills. He actively helps recruit volunteers for events by speaking to groups in the community and at the college.
  • Shannon Hardin has been a Special Olympics athlete for 22 years. He competes in basketball, softball, bowling, and track and field. He is known for his athletic talent and his hard work ethic. He trains regularly and strives to improve his performance. He is also a mentor and a friend to his teammates and coaches.
  • Melissa Hylton has been participating in Special Olympics for 25 years. She is a multi-sport athlete who excels in basketball, softball, bowling, and bocce. She is a team player who always encourages and supports her fellow athletes. She is also a leader who serves as a Global Messenger, a Health Messenger, and a member of the Athlete Input Council.

  • Rex West has been involved with Special Olympics for 32 years. He participates in basketball, softball, bowling, and bocce. He is a loyal and dependable athlete who always shows up for practices and competitions. He is also a friendly and outgoing person who enjoys socializing with his peers and volunteers.
  • Linda Heine has been a Special Olympics athlete for 35 years. She is a skilled athlete who competes in basketball, softball, bowling, and bocce. She is a determined and courageous athlete who overcomes challenges and never gives up. She is also a compassionate and generous person who shares her gifts and talents with others.

The Impact of Special Olympics

Special Olympics is a global movement that provides year-round sports training and competition for people with intellectual disabilities. It also offers health, education, and leadership programs that empower and transform the lives of its participants and their families.

According to Special Olympics Kansas, there are more than 5,000 athletes and 2,000 coaches and volunteers in the state who are involved in the movement. They participate in 18 different sports and more than 100 events throughout the year.
