Officer Doug Herron Remembered as a Devoted Servant and Friend
Savannah, GA – A Savannah police officer who died after experiencing a medical episode while working an off-duty assignment was honored by his family, friends, and colleagues on Saturday. Officer Doug “Twin” Herron, a Savannah native who devoted his career to protecting and serving the city he loved, was laid to rest at Calvary Baptist Temple following a funeral service that celebrated his life and legacy.
Herron, 49, joined the Savannah Police Department in 2002 and served in various units, including patrol, traffic, K-9, and SWAT. He was also a member of the Honor Guard and the Crisis Negotiation Team. He was known for his professionalism, dedication, and compassion, as well as his sense of humor and infectious smile.
“He was a great officer, a great friend, a great mentor, and a great brother,” said Sgt. Robert Santoro, who worked with Herron for 18 years. “He always had a positive attitude and a willingness to help anyone in need. He loved his job and he loved this community.”
Herron’s Death Shocks the Savannah Police Department
Herron’s death came as a shock to the Savannah Police Department and the community he served. He was working an off-duty assignment at a local business on August 11 when he suddenly collapsed. He was rushed to the hospital, where he later died.
The cause of his death has not been officially released, but sources say he suffered a heart attack. His family said he had no known health issues and was in good shape. He had recently passed his physical fitness test and was looking forward to retiring in a few years.
“He was the picture of health,” said his twin brother, Don Herron. “He worked out every day, ate right, and took care of himself. He had no signs or symptoms of anything wrong. It’s just hard to believe that he’s gone.”
Herron Leaves Behind a Loving Family and a Legacy of Service
Herron is survived by his wife of 25 years, Lisa Herron, and their two children, Tyler and Taylor. He also leaves behind his parents, Donald and Barbara Herron, his brother Don Herron, his sister Donna Herron, and several nieces and nephews.
Herron’s family said he was a devoted husband, father, son, brother, and uncle who enjoyed spending time with them. He also loved fishing, hunting, golfing, and riding his motorcycle.
“He was the best thing that ever happened to me,” said Lisa Herron. “He was my soulmate, my best friend, my everything. He was an amazing father to our kids. He taught them how to be respectful, responsible, and kind. He was always there for them.”
Herron’s family said they are grateful for the support they have received from the Savannah Police Department and the community. They said they are proud of his service and his impact on others.
“He touched so many lives,” said Don Herron. “He made a difference in this world. He left behind a legacy of service that will never be forgotten.”
