Punjab came to a grinding halt today as farmers enforced a statewide bandh to press their demand for a legal guarantee of Minimum Support Price (MSP). Organized by the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha, the strike has brought traffic, businesses, and essential supplies to a standstill in many parts of the state.
The bandh, which began early Monday morning, is scheduled to continue until 4 PM. Emergency services, including ambulances and vehicles related to weddings or urgent situations, remain operational, while rail and road networks have been heavily impacted.
Traffic Paralysis and Service Shutdowns
The strike has resulted in over 280 blockades across key highways and railway tracks. Protesters have set up chokepoints in cities and towns, severely disrupting commuter traffic. Both public and private bus services have been suspended, and several trains passing through Punjab have been canceled or delayed.
Shops, markets, and other commercial establishments remain closed in solidarity with the farmers’ cause. Additionally, essential supplies such as milk, fruits, and vegetables are unavailable in many areas due to the widespread support from trade organizations and unions.
“Chakka jam will continue until 4 PM,” a senior farmer leader reiterated, urging people to stay off the roads unless necessary.
Widespread Support from Various Groups
The protest has garnered backing from a diverse range of organizations, including transporters, employee unions, toll plaza workers, teachers’ associations, and social groups. Sarwan Singh Pandher, coordinator of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha, emphasized the collective effort to send a strong message to the government.
The farmers have been camping at the Shambhu and Khanauri border points between Punjab and Haryana since February 13. Their earlier attempt to march to Delhi was thwarted by security forces, leading to this intensified call for action.
Railways Bear the Brunt
The railway network has been among the hardest-hit sectors, with multiple trains canceled or delayed. Key routes connecting Punjab to neighboring states have been blocked, leaving thousands of passengers stranded.
The state government is closely monitoring the situation, though officials have refrained from intervening directly to avoid escalation.
Businesses and Daily Life Affected
Beyond traffic disruptions, the bandh has impacted the livelihoods of many daily wage earners and small businesses. Major marketplaces wore a deserted look as traders kept their shutters down in solidarity.
While the strike underscores the farmers’ resolve, it also highlights the growing frustration among the broader population as essential supplies remain suspended.
Emergency Services Continue Unhindered
Despite the widespread disruptions, emergency services have been exempted from the bandh. Ambulances and other vehicles in critical situations have been allowed to pass through the blockades. Protesters have assured that urgent needs will not be obstructed.
