A Personal Mission to Make Hockey Safer
Pat LaFontaine, one of the greatest hockey players of all time, knows the devastating effects of concussions firsthand. He suffered at least six concussions during his 16-year career in the NHL, which ended prematurely in 1998 due to post-concussion syndrome. Now, he is on a personal mission to make hockey safer for players of all ages and levels.
LaFontaine, 58, has launched a new company called Valor, which offers a revolutionary new helmet that addresses major components of head injuries in the oft-brutal sport. The helmet, called the Valor Axiom, has been awarded a five-star safety rating from Virginia Tech and has come to market in recent weeks.
“We were always taught you’re not going to get rid of concussions … but now the science can tell you that you can actually minimize some of the damage that’s occurring from some of these hits,” he told The Post. “Valor is all about the evolution of the helmet and its protection capabilities.”
How the Valor Axiom Helmet Works
The Valor Axiom helmet is designed to absorb and dissipate the impact forces that cause concussions and other brain injuries. It features a patented technology called Impact Absorbing System (IAS), which consists of three layers: a hard outer shell, a soft inner liner, and a series of shock-absorbing pods that are strategically placed inside the helmet.
The pods are made of a material called D3O, which is soft and flexible under normal conditions, but hardens instantly upon impact. The pods also have air channels that allow them to compress and release air during collisions, creating a cushioning effect. The pods are customized for different positions and levels of play, providing optimal protection for each player.
The helmet also has an adjustable fit system that ensures a snug and comfortable fit for every head shape and size. The helmet is compatible with most visors and cages, and comes in various colors and styles.
The Benefits of the Valor Axiom Helmet
According to LaFontaine, the Valor Axiom helmet has several benefits over conventional helmets. First, it reduces the linear and rotational acceleration of the head during impacts, which are the main causes of concussions. Second, it reduces the frequency and severity of sub-concussive impacts, which are smaller but cumulative hits that can lead to long-term brain damage. Third, it improves the comfort and performance of the players by providing a better fit and ventilation.
LaFontaine said he has received positive feedback from players who have tried the Valor Axiom helmet, including some NHL stars like Sidney Crosby and Connor McDavid. He said he hopes to see more players adopt the helmet and raise awareness about concussion prevention.
“I think it’s important for players to understand that they have a choice,” he said. “They can choose a helmet that’s going to protect them better and give them more confidence on the ice.”
LaFontaine also said he wants to make the helmet accessible and affordable for youth hockey programs, which often lack the resources and education to deal with concussions. He said he has partnered with several organizations, such as USA Hockey and Atlantic Amateur Hockey Association (AAHA), to promote player safety and provide helmets at discounted prices.
