PACE Sends 32-Member Delegation to Monitor Georgia’s Upcoming Elections

As Georgia prepares for its parliamentary elections on October 26, a significant international presence is set to observe the process. A 32-member delegation from the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), led by Iulian Bulai from Romania, will arrive in the country from October 24 to 27 to ensure the elections are conducted fairly and transparently.

A Collaborative Effort for Democratic Oversight

The PACE delegation will not be alone in its mission. Observers from various international bodies, including the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, the European Parliament, the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, and the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR), will join forces to monitor the electoral process. This collaborative effort underscores the importance of democratic integrity in Georgia, especially in light of the country’s recent political tensions.

  • Key Meetings Planned:
    • Leaders of political parties and coalitions
    • Chairperson of the Central Election Commission
    • Head of the Anti-Corruption Bureau
    • Representatives from civil society and media

The delegation’s agenda includes meetings with key political figures and civil society representatives, allowing them to gain insights into the electoral landscape and the challenges faced by various stakeholders.

Legal Support and Observational Duties

To further bolster the integrity of the observation mission, a representative from the Venice Commission, the Council of Europe’s group of independent legal experts, will provide legal support during the visit. This addition aims to ensure that all electoral processes adhere to international legal standards.

On election day, the PACE delegation will observe the voting process, assessing the conduct of the elections and the overall environment in which they take place. Their findings will contribute to a comprehensive report on the electoral process, which will be shared with the international community.

As Georgia stands at a critical juncture in its democratic journey, the presence of international observers highlights the global commitment to supporting fair and transparent elections. The outcome of these elections will be pivotal for the country’s future direction and its aspirations for closer ties with Europe.
