Marjorie Taylor Greene Accuses Georgia Prosecutor of Racketeering, Without Evidence

The congresswoman claims that Fani Willis is the real criminal, not Trump

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) has made a baseless accusation against Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, who recently indicted former President Donald Trump and 18 of his allies on state charges related to their attempts to overturn the 2020 election in Georgia. Greene said that Willis is “guilty of” crimes under the RICO statutes related to racketeering and corruption, not Trump. She also alleged that the charges against Trump are part of a “grand conspiracy” by the Democratic Party to use the justice system to influence the 2024 election.

Greene made these claims during an appearance on Fox News’ Sunday Morning Futures, where she expressed her support for Trump and denounced the indictment as “pure communism”. She did not provide any evidence to back up her allegations, nor did she explain how Willis could be charged with RICO crimes. She also did not address the fact that Trump’s own phone calls to Georgia election officials, in which he pressured them to “find” votes for him, are part of the evidence against him.

The indictment charges Trump and his associates with violating Georgia’s RICO act

The indictment, which was announced on Monday, charges Trump and 18 of his associates with violating Georgia’s RICO act, which is a state law that targets organized crime and corruption. The indictment alleges that Trump and his co-defendants engaged in a conspiracy to unlawfully change the outcome of the election in favor of Trump, by using various methods such as pressuring state officials, accessing voting machines and data, and filing false documents.

The indictment also names several lawyers who worked for or with Trump, such as Rudy Giuliani, Sidney Powell, Jenna Ellis, and John Eastman. It also includes former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, former Justice Department official Jeffrey Clark, and several others. The indictment lists 41 counts in total, including racketeering, conspiracy, impersonating a public officer, forgery, false statements, and computer crimes. The racketeering charge carries a sentence of five to 20 years, while the other charges have variable sentences.

Willis is an elected Democrat who has been investigating Trump’s interference in the election since early 2021. She has said that she is following the facts and the law, and that she is not motivated by politics or personal animosity. She has also said that she respects the office of the presidency and that she hopes that Trump will cooperate with the investigation.

Willis said that arrest warrants have been issued for all of the defendants and that each has until Aug. 25 to surrender voluntarily. She said that she intends to try all 19 defendants together, and that she aims to have the case go to trial in the next six months. She also said that she is confident that she can secure a conviction, despite the challenges of prosecuting a former president and his allies.
