Mt. Zion student gets full scholarship to Alabama State

A senior at Mt. Zion High School has been awarded a full academic scholarship to Alabama State University, a historically black college in Montgomery, Alabama.

A dream come true

Shanice Jones, 18, said she was ecstatic when she received the acceptance letter and the scholarship offer from Alabama State University (ASU). She said she had always dreamed of attending a historically black college or university (HBCU) since she was a little girl.

“I was so happy and excited. I couldn’t believe it. It was like a dream come true,” Jones said. “I’ve always wanted to go to an HBCU because I feel like they have a rich culture and history, and they provide a lot of opportunities for black students.”

Jones said she applied to ASU after attending a college fair at her school, where she met with representatives from various HBCUs. She said she was impressed by ASU’s academic programs, campus life, and alumni network.

“I really liked what ASU had to offer. They have a lot of majors and minors that interest me, such as psychology, sociology, and criminal justice. They also have a lot of clubs and organizations that I want to join, such as the marching band, the choir, and the student government. And they have a lot of successful alumni who have made an impact in different fields, such as politics, entertainment, and sports,” Jones said.

A hard-working student

Jones is a hard-working student who has excelled in both academics and extracurricular activities at Mt. Zion High School. She has a 4.0 grade point average and is ranked first in her class of 300 students. She is also the president of the National Honor Society, the vice president of the Beta Club, and the captain of the cheerleading squad.

She said she has always been motivated by her parents, who are both educators, and her teachers, who have encouraged her to pursue her goals.

“My parents and my teachers have been very supportive and inspiring. They have always pushed me to do my best and to challenge myself. They have also taught me the importance of education and giving back to the community,” Jones said.

Jones said she plans to major in psychology and minor in sociology at ASU, and hopes to become a clinical psychologist or a social worker in the future. She said she wants to help people who are struggling with mental health issues or social problems.

“I want to make a difference in the world by helping others. I want to use my skills and knowledge to help people overcome their challenges and improve their lives. I think that’s my purpose and passion,” Jones said.

A proud school

Mt. Zion High School is proud of Jones and her achievement, and congratulates her on her scholarship. The school’s principal, Dr. James Smith, said Jones is a role model for other students and a testament to the school’s excellence.

“Shanice is an outstanding student who has worked hard and earned this scholarship. She is a leader, a scholar, and a citizen who represents our school well. We are very proud of her and we wish her all the best at ASU,” Smith said.

Smith said Jones is one of the many students at Mt. Zion High School who have received scholarships to various colleges and universities, both in-state and out-of-state. He said the school has a strong academic culture and a dedicated staff that prepares students for higher education and career success.

“We have a lot of talented and ambitious students at Mt. Zion High School who have achieved great things. We have a lot of teachers and counselors who support and guide them along the way. We have a lot of programs and resources that enhance their learning and development. We are a school of excellence and we are committed to helping our students reach their full potential,” Smith said.
