Lightning Strike Destroys Legionaries of Christ Home in Georgia

Early Morning Fire Reduces House to Ashes

A powerful lightning strike during severe storms tore through the home of the Legionaries of Christ community in Cumming, Georgia, early this morning. The house, located on Woodsong Road, went up in flames around 4:45 a.m. and was completely destroyed. Despite the intensity of the fire, the four priests inside at the time escaped unharmed, thanks to quick action and the help of neighbors.

A Frightening Awakening for Residents

The fire broke out in the early hours when most of the 12 priests and RC Mission Corps missionaries who live in the home were away on religious duties. However, four priests were inside when the lightning struck.

Fr. Scott Reilly, LC, Associate Pastor at St. Brendan the Navigator Parish, was one of them. He recalled how another priest spotted a strange glow in the ceiling moments after the strike. Realizing the house was on fire, they immediately called 911 and evacuated.

“Our neighbors are amazing,” Fr. Scott said. “They came to our aid right away. We went over to the neighbors right in front of us, who gave us coffee and whatever we needed. They had breakfast for us and were all so kind.”

Firefighters’ Efforts and the Aftermath

The Forsyth County Fire Department responded quickly, but the fire had already spread out of control. Firefighters worked tirelessly to contain the blaze, but the structure was beyond saving. Eventually, they were forced to retreat for safety reasons.

Neighbors watched as flames consumed the home. By the time the fire was out, nothing remained but charred rubble. The priests, though grateful to be safe, lost everything in the fire, including personal belongings, documents, and essential items.

Uncertain Road Ahead for the Legionary Community

While the home was insured, the community now faces significant financial challenges. The costs of demolition, clean-up, temporary housing, and rebuilding will not be fully covered. Their ministry work at Pinecrest Academy, St. Brendan the Navigator Parish, and other locations across the Atlanta area must continue, making the financial burden even greater.

To assist with expenses, a GoFundMe campaign has been set up. The funds will help cover:

  • Immediate temporary housing for the displaced priests and missionaries.
  • Insurance deductibles and costs not covered by insurance.
  • Rebuilding efforts, which could take months or longer.
  • Replacement of essential items such as clothing, books, and household goods.

Community Support and Hope for Rebuilding

The Legionaries of Christ have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from the Atlanta area and beyond. Messages of encouragement, prayers, and donations have already begun flowing in as they work through the aftermath of the disaster.

While the road ahead remains uncertain, the priests remain hopeful. Their faith and the generosity of those around them will be key to rebuilding not just their home but also their sense of stability.
