No Open Bus Parade for India’s Champions Trophy Win; Players Return to Separate Cities

India’s Champions Trophy triumph in Dubai was historic, but the celebrations won’t mirror the euphoric scenes of last year’s T20 World Cup victory. Unlike the grand open bus parade that swept through Mumbai in 2024, this time, Team India’s return is subdued, with players arriving in different cities instead of a collective celebration.

Individual Arrivals Mark a Different Homecoming

The decision to forgo a massive public celebration stems from logistical reasons and player commitments. Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya received a warm welcome at the Mumbai airport on Monday night. Meanwhile, head coach Gautam Gambhir and young pacer Harshit Rana landed in New Delhi. Star batter Virat Kohli is expected to arrive soon, along with others who delayed their return.

A BCCI official explained, “All the players with families left from Dubai on Monday. Some stayed back for a couple of days.” The immediate scheduling of IPL 2025, set to begin on March 22, has left little time for extended celebrations.

Why No Parade This Time?

India’s open bus parades are reserved for select occasions, mostly after World Cup victories on foreign soil. The 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 ODI World Cup wins were celebrated in grand style, but the 2013 Champions Trophy win under MS Dhoni did not get the same treatment.

India Champions Trophy celebration

This year follows that precedent. Despite India’s historic back-to-back ICC trophy wins, BCCI opted to skip the parade, citing scheduling constraints. Players are already shifting focus to their IPL franchises, leaving minimal room for nationwide festivities.

IPL Takes Priority as Players Shift Focus

With IPL just around the corner, most players have limited time for celebrations. Franchise commitments take precedence, with pre-season training camps beginning soon. Unlike last year’s T20 World Cup win, which had a significant gap before major domestic tournaments, this time, players must swiftly transition from international success to franchise duty.

BCCI’s decision aligns with the players’ schedule. Many of them will be reuniting soon, not as national teammates but as IPL rivals. Training and team preparations will begin immediately, allowing little room for any extended breaks.

Mixed Reactions from Fans

Fans had expected another grand celebration, given the significance of India winning back-to-back ICC titles. Many took to social media to express disappointment over the lack of a parade. Others understood the practical reasons, acknowledging the tight cricketing calendar.

  • Some fans lamented that a Champions Trophy win deserved equal recognition to a World Cup victory.
  • Others pointed out that players’ well-being and rest should be prioritized before a hectic IPL season.
  • A few noted that a grand reception could still be organized later, even if an immediate parade wasn’t feasible.

Despite the absence of an open bus parade, India’s victory remains a moment of national pride. The players may not be celebrating on the streets, but their achievements continue to be celebrated across the country.
