Huskies football and soccer teams face tough challenges in season opener

The University of Saskatchewan Huskies sports teams had a mixed start to their season, with some impressive wins and some disappointing losses. Here are some highlights from the football and soccer teams’ action over the weekend.

Football team dominates Alberta in 40-7 victory

The Huskies football team showed no mercy to the visiting Alberta Golden Bears on Friday night, scoring six touchdowns and holding their opponents to just one. The Huskies won 40-7, improving their record to 2-0 in the Canada West conference.

Quarterback Mason Nyhus led the offense with 18 completions for 262 yards and three touchdowns, while running back Adam Machart rushed for 136 yards and two touchdowns. Receiver Colton Klassen caught two touchdown passes and added another on a punt return.

The Huskies defense was equally dominant, limiting the Golden Bears to 216 yards of total offense and forcing four turnovers. Linebacker Ben Whiting had a team-high seven tackles and an interception, while defensive lineman Reuben Mayes had two sacks.

The Huskies will face their biggest test of the season next week, when they travel to Calgary to take on the defending Vanier Cup champions Dinos.

Soccer teams struggle to find their groove

The Huskies soccer teams had a tough weekend on the road, losing three out of four games against the MacEwan Griffins and the Alberta Golden Bears/Pandas.

  • The men’s team is still looking for their first win of the season, after losing 3-2 to the Griffins on Thursday and tying 1-1 with the Bears on Friday. The Huskies trailed 3-0 at halftime against the Griffins, but mounted a comeback in the second half with goals from Rhett Vavra and Kwame Opoku. However, they could not find the equalizer before time ran out. Against the Bears, the Huskies took an early lead with a goal from Gabriel Buatois, but conceded a penalty in the second half that allowed the hosts to level the score.
  • The women’s team split their games, losing 2-1 to the Pandas on Thursday and beating the Griffins 3-0 on Friday. The Huskies fell behind 2-0 in the first half against the Pandas, and could only manage a late goal from Maya Gabruch. Against the Griffins, the Huskies scored three goals in the span of 10 minutes in the second half, with Gabruch netting two and Taneil Gay adding one.
