Firefighters Balance Duty and Christmas Cheer in Houston County

While most families celebrate Christmas with gifts, laughter, and warm traditions, for Houston County firefighters, the day often looks a little different. At EMS Station 2, the holiday spirit mingles with the ever-present duty to save lives. It’s not about what’s under the tree—it’s about what’s on the line.

“Guys always say, if you’re working Christmas, you’re guaranteed a fire,” said Lt. Cal Burton, capturing the high stakes and unpredictability of their job.

Finding Festivity at the Firehouse

Even during a 24-hour shift, the firefighters don’t let the holiday pass unnoticed. Decorations brighten the station’s lounge, featuring a firefighter-themed tree and festive ornaments. A nutcracker stands proudly by, adding charm to the scene.

Though their schedule demands focus on essential routines and equipment inspections, the firefighters embrace camaraderie. “We give the guys the day to do what they want,” Burton shared. Whether it’s watching a holiday movie or sharing a meal, these moments bring a sense of normalcy and cheer.

The shift structure at the station is designed with a rotation in mind. Newer firefighters work Christmas for two consecutive years before earning time off for the next two. Senior firefighters, on the other hand, enjoy a longer break after fulfilling their holiday shifts.

Families Adapt to Unconventional Holidays

For these first responders, Christmas celebrations often require creative planning. Micah Story, a firefighter, described how he and his wife, an EMS responder, adjusted their festivities.

“We did Christmas with [our families] last night,” Story said. “My wife worked last night, I work today, and then we’re both off tomorrow. We’ll celebrate together then.”

This flexibility is a testament to the dedication these individuals—and their families—bring to their roles. Their ability to adapt and find joy speaks volumes about their resilience and commitment.

A Day Like No Other

Despite the holiday decorations and moments of rest, Christmas remains a day with heightened stakes. Firefighters prepare for the unexpected, knowing that emergencies don’t take holidays.

For Houston County’s firefighters, balancing their critical responsibilities with holiday traditions is a unique challenge. Yet, it’s clear that their focus on community and camaraderie shines brighter than any festive lights.

Their message is simple: Christmas isn’t just about celebration—it’s about service, sacrifice, and making the most of the time you have, whether at work or with loved ones.
