Gunman Kills One, Injures Another at Honduran Consulate in Georgia

A tragic shooting unfolded outside the Honduran consulate near Atlanta, Georgia, on Monday, leaving one person dead and another injured. The assailant, armed with a weapon, was arrested shortly after fleeing the scene, local officials reported.

A Deadly Confrontation at the Consulate

The incident occurred outside the Consulate General of Honduras in Doraville, about 16 miles northeast of Atlanta. The suspect, identified as Jose Emanuel Olmo Rosado, attempted to enter the consulate building with a weapon, which was prohibited.

When denied entry, he opened fire, fatally shooting 50-year-old security guard Jesús G. Loera Urias, who worked for a private security firm. A second individual, Kevin Rolando Velasquez Flores, sustained a gunshot wound to the leg and was transported to a hospital.

Witnesses recounted that Loera had used pepper spray in an attempt to subdue the gunman before being shot. Despite his injuries, Loera managed to secure the building’s door, an act many believe saved lives.

Suspect’s Arrest and Motive

Rosado was apprehended at a QuikTrip gas station shortly after fleeing the scene. Initially thought to be Honduran, officials later clarified he is of Puerto Rican origin. Authorities revealed that Rosado was the partner of a Honduran citizen who was visiting the consulate for paperwork.

The motive for the attack remains unclear. Investigators are exploring a physical altercation between Rosado and the security guard that escalated into violence. Rosado has been charged with felony murder and two counts of aggravated assault and is being held in DeKalb County Jail.

A Heroic Security Guard

The late Jesús G. Loera Urias has been hailed as a hero by both Honduran officials and local community members. Honduran Foreign Minister Eduardo Enrique Reina expressed gratitude for Loera’s bravery, stating that his actions likely prevented further casualties.

On social media, Hondurans in the area honored Loera’s sacrifice. One tribute read, “You gave your life to close that door,” accompanied by photos of the security guard.

Community Reaction

The shooting shocked the local community, which includes a significant Honduran population. Many praised Loera’s courage, recognizing his role in protecting those inside the consulate.

At the same time, the incident has sparked concerns about safety at international consulates and the measures in place to protect visitors and staff.
