A Coordinated Response Effort

As Hurricane Helene approached, the Georgia National Guard was proactive, monitoring the storm’s progress and preparing for potential impacts. Once the hurricane made landfall, the Guard quickly mobilized Soldiers, Airmen, and State Defense Force volunteers to assist local authorities and residents.

Essential Support and Logistics

The Georgia National Guard’s response included specialized units that enhanced local capabilities. The 177th Brigade Engineer Battalion quickly mobilized to clear routes from Valdosta to Statesboro, facilitating access for food, water, and emergency services.

Additionally, the Augusta-based 878th Engineer Battalion addressed a critical water supply issue when a pump failure threatened drinking water for over 160,000 residents. Their swift action restored the system, preventing a potential crisis.

Logistics Overview
Forward supply point established in Macon

Logistical support was vital, with transportation units from the 48th Infantry Brigade Combat Team and the 78th Troop Command coordinating the movement of supplies. The Georgia Air National Guard also played a significant role, utilizing C-130J aircraft to transport meals-ready-to-eat from Arkansas to Georgia.

Community Impact and Relief Distribution

The response to Hurricane Helene culminated in the establishment of 53 points of distribution (POD) across the affected areas. Local emergency management officials, community volunteers, and Georgia Guardsmen worked together to ensure that relief supplies reached those in need.

By the end of the operation, nearly 54,000 vehicles had been supplied with hundreds of thousands of cases of water, food, and ice. Almost 1,000 personnel from the Georgia Department of Defense supported the POD mission, coordinating logistics and physically distributing supplies.

Lt. Col. Craig Henderson, commander of the 177th BEB, praised the dedication of the service members, stating, “Our committed and professional service members were able to swiftly respond to provide Georgians relief.”

The response to Hurricane Helene marks the Georgia National Guard’s largest storm response since Tropical Storm Alberto in 1994, demonstrating their readiness and capability to assist communities in times of crisis.
