Fugitive wanted for killing woman in Georgia captured in Nevada

How the U.S. Marshals tracked down the suspect

Charles Wise, the man accused of fatally shooting Monique Miles and injuring another man in Clayton County, Georgia, in July 2022, was arrested in Sparks, Nevada, on Wednesday, according to the U.S. Marshals Service. Wise was on the run for more than a year and a half, and was considered armed and dangerous.

The U.S. Marshals said they developed information that Wise was possibly residing in the Sparks area, which is near Reno, Nevada. They coordinated with the local law enforcement agencies and conducted surveillance on several locations. On Jan. 26, they spotted Wise leaving an apartment complex and followed him to a nearby gas station, where they took him into custody without incident.

Wise is currently being held at the Washoe County jail, awaiting extradition to Georgia. He faces charges of murder, aggravated assault, possession of a weapon during the commission of a crime, and other offenses.

The motive behind the shooting

The shooting that led to Wise’s arrest occurred on July 21, 2022, at a home on Richard Road in Conley, Georgia. According to the Clayton County Police Department, Wise was involved in a dispute with his landlord, who rented a room to Miles’ girlfriend. Miles, 34, was visiting her girlfriend at the time, and tried to intervene in the argument. Wise allegedly shot Miles multiple times, killing her at the scene. He also shot the landlord, who survived the attack.

Miles was a devoted mother to her daughter, Mekenzie, and a beloved friend to many. Her family and friends described her as a lovable, caring, and peaceful person, who always tried to de-escalate conflicts. “She was a great mother, good mom, good mom to my son, everything,” said Miles’ ex-husband, Darius Hester, who shared custody of their daughter.

Miles’ death left a void in the lives of her loved ones, who have been waiting for justice for more than a year. “We don’t understand how can some man can be that upset with somebody,” said Sherri Painter, Miles’ friend.

The reaction from the authorities and the community

The arrest of Wise was welcomed by the authorities and the community, who praised the efforts of the U.S. Marshals and the local law enforcement agencies. “You can run, but you can’t hide,” said Clayton County Sheriff Levon Allen, who warned the remaining most wanted criminals in his jurisdiction. “We will find you and bring you to justice.”

The Clayton County Police Department also expressed its gratitude to the U.S. Marshals and the Sparks Police Department for their assistance in apprehending Wise. “This arrest is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our law enforcement partners,” the department said in a statement.

The family and friends of Miles were relieved to hear the news of Wise’s capture, and hoped that it would bring them some closure. “I’m glad they got him. I’m glad he’s off the streets. I’m glad he can’t hurt nobody else,” said Hester. “I just want him to pay for what he did.”
