Forest Park Residents Invited to Dispose of Junk at Clean Sweep Event

Forest Park, a city in Georgia, is hosting a quarterly Clean Sweep event on January 6, 2024, to help residents get rid of unwanted items from their properties. The event is free and open to city residents only, who will need to show proof of residency to participate.

What is the Clean Sweep Event?

The Clean Sweep event is a community initiative that aims to improve the appearance and cleanliness of the city by allowing residents to dispose of junk or trash that they cannot normally throw away in their regular garbage collection. The event is held every three months, usually on the first Saturday of the month, at two locations: 330 Forest Pkwy. and 4853 Springdale Rd.

Residents can bring anything for disposal, except for dirt, bricks, acids, unknown chemicals, flammable liquids, or cement. Car tires are also accepted, but limited to four per resident. Paint cans that have been dried with kitty litter are also allowed.

The event runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and residents are advised to arrive early to avoid long lines and traffic congestion.

Why is the Clean Sweep Event Important?

The Clean Sweep event is important for several reasons. First, it helps residents clear out clutter and unwanted items from their homes, yards, garages, and basements, which can create fire hazards, health risks, and pest problems. Second, it helps the city prevent illegal dumping of waste materials on vacant lots, streets, or alleys, which can harm the environment and lower property values. Third, it helps the city promote recycling and environmental awareness by diverting some of the waste materials from landfills and sending them to appropriate facilities for reuse or disposal.

According to the city’s website, the Clean Sweep event has been successful and popular among residents, who have expressed their appreciation and satisfaction with the service. The city estimates that it has collected over 1,000 tons of waste materials since the inception of the program in 2019.

How to Participate in the Clean Sweep Event?

To participate in the Clean Sweep event, residents need to follow these steps:

  • Gather the items that they want to dispose of and load them in their vehicles.
  • Drive to either of the two locations: 330 Forest Pkwy. or 4853 Springdale Rd.
  • Show proof of residency, such as a driver’s license, utility bill, or tax bill, to the staff at the entrance.
  • Follow the directions of the staff and unload the items in the designated areas.
  • Drive away and enjoy a cleaner and safer city.

Residents are reminded to wear masks and practice social distancing while at the event, as the city is still under COVID-19 precautions. Residents are also encouraged to donate reusable items to local charities or thrift stores, instead of throwing them away.
