The European Union (EU) has taken a significant step toward integrating Ukraine and Moldova into its fold. On June 25, the first Intergovernmental Conferences will convene in Luxembourg, marking the official start of accession negotiations with these two candidate countries.
The Negotiation Frameworks
At the Economic and Financial Affairs (ECOFIN) Council meeting, the 27 EU ministers unanimously approved the negotiation frameworks for Ukraine and Moldova. These frameworks outline the guidelines and principles for the accession negotiations. The process will culminate in the formal entry of both nations into the European Union.
A Path to Peace and Prosperity
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed his joy, stating, “Ukraine is returning to Europe, where it has belonged for centuries, as a full member of the European community.” His Moldovan counterpart, President Maia Sandu, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that EU membership is their path to peace, prosperity, and a better life for all citizens.
Challenges Ahead
As the accession talks commence, both countries face challenges related to alignment with EU standards, economic reforms, and strengthening democratic institutions. However, the commitment to shared values and cooperation will guide them toward a future within the EU family.
