In a significant move towards sustainable development, the Czech Republic’s Ambassador to Georgia, Petr Kubernát, visited the Machakhela Protected Landscape. This visit marks a pivotal moment in the ongoing initiatives aimed at fostering a green future for the region.

A Partnership for Sustainability

During his visit, Ambassador Kubernát reviewed the current initiatives and discussed potential future collaborations. The partnership between UNDP Georgia, funded by the Czech Government, and implemented in collaboration with Georgia’s Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture and Khelvachauri Municipality, is a testament to the international cooperation for environmental conservation. The ambassador’s visit serves as a reminder of the importance of such alliances in advancing sustainable development goals.

Enhancing Machakhela’s Natural and Cultural Heritage

The Machakhela Protected Landscape, a recently designated protected area in the Ajara Autonomous Republic of Georgia, is at the heart of these initiatives. The area is known for its rich environmental and cultural heritage, which includes unique Colchic Forests and historical sites. The ongoing project, supported by a Euro 100,000 fund from the Czech Government, aims to strengthen the administration of the Protected Landscape and formulate a comprehensive management and operational plan.

The project also introduces a functional urban and spatial planning system to bolster sustainable economic activities while preserving the region’s rich biodiversity. The initiative is set to continue until March 2025 and is a crucial step towards protecting the Machakhela Gorge’s unique biodiversity, which is celebrated for its distinctive forest and river habitats.

A Model for Green Growth

The efforts in Machakhela are reflective of a larger vision for green growth. Protected areas like Machakhela play a vital role in delivering environmental and economic advantages by preserving biodiversity and fostering tourism opportunities. The meticulous management of these areas is crucial to fully harnessing their potential, benefitting both people and the planet.

The ambassador’s visit and the ongoing initiatives highlight the collaborative efforts involving UNDP, the Czech Government, and the Ajara Autonomous Republic Government. Together, they have established a model for green growth that other regions can emulate.
