Strong Offensive Showing Propels Creighton to Fourth Win in Three Days
Creighton softball wrapped up its weekend at the Kennesaw State Tournament in style, defeating Morehead State 6-2 on Sunday morning. With this win, the Bluejays improved to a solid 7-3 record, while Morehead State dropped to 1-9.
Timely Hits Shift Momentum Early
Morehead State struck first, manufacturing a run in the second inning. Taikibrea Campbell drew a leadoff walk and later scored on Jordan Donato’s sharp RBI single through the right side, giving the Eagles an early 1-0 lead.
Creighton wasted little time responding. The bottom of the third saw sophomore Lynn Davis single to left to start the inning. A defensive miscue by Morehead State allowed two runners to advance into scoring position with no outs. Senior Sydra Seville put the Bluejays on the board with a fielder’s choice, and Sydney Potter followed with an RBI single to give Creighton a 2-1 lead.
Four-Run Fifth Inning Breaks the Game Open
The fourth inning remained quiet, but the Bluejays erupted for four runs in the fifth to create separation. Graduate student Hannah Poole got things going with a leadoff single before Potter smashed an RBI double into the left-center gap. A walk to Kenzie Nakasawa kept the inning alive, and junior Erika Perez capitalized with a two-run double, stretching Creighton’s lead to 5-1. Seville added an RBI single to cap off the rally, pushing the advantage to 6-1.
Morehead State attempted a comeback in the sixth, cutting the deficit to 6-2 after doubles from Ilencia Lightbody and Campbell. However, Creighton’s pitching duo of Brooklyn Patchen and Abby Rusher closed the door, preventing any further damage.
Pitching and Depth Key to Victory
Creighton’s offense saw contributions from across the lineup, with nine different players recording a hit. Potter led the way with a 3-for-4 performance, including two doubles and two RBI. Perez also delivered a key double and drove in a pair of runs.
On the mound, Patchen earned the win, tossing six innings while allowing two runs and striking out four. Rusher came in for the final frame to seal the victory.
What’s Next for the Bluejays?
Creighton now turns its attention to the San Marcos Classic, hosted by Texas State. The Bluejays are set for a grueling five-game stretch in three days, beginning with an 11 a.m. matchup against Kansas on Friday.
