Clayton County Youth Commissioners Shine at Georgia Youth Assembly

Clayton County, GA – A group of 17 youth commissioners from Clayton County participated in the 2023 Georgia Youth Assembly Civic Engagement Conference, held at the State Capitol in Atlanta from December 16 to 18. The conference is a three-day learning opportunity for high school students to learn more about the Georgia state government and to engage in debates, bill writing, and committee work.

Youth Commissioners Earn Awards and Recognition

The Clayton County Youth Commissioners demonstrated their leadership skills and civic knowledge at the conference, earning awards and recognition for their outstanding performance. Youth Commissioner Miatta Harris received “Best Orator” and Youth Commissioner Andy Pham was awarded “Associate Justice for the 2024 Youth Assembly Conference” after debating with students from across Georgia.

The youth commissioners also wrote and presented bills on various topics, such as mental health, education, and environmental justice. Some of their bills were passed by the House and Senate, and some were even signed by the Youth Governor.

 

Youth Commissioners Learn from Elected Officials and Peers

The conference also provided the youth commissioners with the opportunity to learn from elected officials and peers who share their passion for civic engagement. They met with State Representative Sandra Scott, who represents Clayton County, and asked her questions about her role and responsibilities. They also interacted with other youth delegates from different counties and schools, exchanging ideas and perspectives on various issues.

Youth Commissioners Represent Clayton County Well

The Clayton County Youth Commission is a program of the Office of Youth Services, which aims to empower young people to become active and responsible citizens. The Office of Youth Services Administrator, Nicole Horne, expressed her pride and appreciation for the youth commissioners who represented Clayton County well at the conference.

“This group of students has shown a commitment to self-improvement, education, and their county, so it is noteworthy that they were able to experience such an extraordinary opportunity,” Horne said. “We are so proud of each of our Youth Commissioners for serving as delegates during the conference and representing Clayton County well.”
