Auburn football fans showed their support for one of the top recruits in the country on Saturday night, as they chanted “We want Ryan!” at five-star wide receiver Ryan Williams, who was in attendance at the Auburn basketball game against UAB.
Williams is a Alabama commit but still considering Auburn
Williams, a 6-foot-2, 185-pound playmaker from Saraland, Alabama, is currently committed to the Crimson Tide, but he has not shut the door on other schools, especially Auburn. He has visited the Tigers several times, most recently for the Iron Bowl, where he witnessed Auburn’s thrilling 24-21 victory over Alabama.
Williams has also reclassified from the 2025 class to the 2024 class, meaning he will be eligible to sign with a college in February. He plans to take official visits to Auburn, Alabama, Texas, Georgia, and LSU before making his final decision.
Auburn has a strong wide receiver class led by Cam Coleman
Auburn has already assembled one of the best wide receiver classes in the nation, led by five-star Cam Coleman, who flipped from Texas A&M to Auburn on Dec. 1. Coleman is the No. 3 wide receiver and No. 9 overall player in the 2024 class, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.
Coleman is joined by four-star prospects Bryce Cain, Malcolm Simmons, and Perry Thompson, who are all ranked among the top 200 players in the country. Auburn’s wide receiver class is currently ranked No. 1 in the SEC and No. 2 in the nation, behind only Ohio State.
Adding Williams to the mix would make Auburn’s wide receiver class even more formidable, as he is the No. 1 wide receiver and No. 4 overall player in the 2024 class. Williams had a sensational sophomore season at Saraland, where he accounted for over 2,200 all-purpose yards and 38 touchdowns. He was named the Alabama Gatorade Player of the Year and voted Mr. Football.
Auburn’s new coach Hugh Freeze is making waves on the recruiting trail
Auburn’s impressive recruiting haul is largely due to the efforts of new head coach Hugh Freeze, who was hired in November after leading Liberty to a 10-2 record and a bowl win in 2023. Freeze is known for his high-octane offense and his ability to develop quarterbacks, such as Eli Manning at Ole Miss and Malik Willis at Liberty.
Freeze has already secured three five-star commits in Coleman, defensive end Jalen Carter, and running back Javon Jackson, as well as 11 four-star commits. Auburn’s 2024 class is currently ranked No. 11 in the nation and No. 4 in the SEC, with room for more additions.
Freeze has also hired a strong staff of assistants, including former Auburn star Marcus Davis as the wide receivers coach. Davis has been instrumental in recruiting Williams and other top targets, as he has built a strong rapport with them and showcased his vision for the offense.
Williams will announce his final decision on Dec. 10
Williams has hinted that he will make a big announcement on Dec. 10, which could be his final commitment or a change of plans. He posted a countdown on his Instagram story and tweeted “Start THE COUNTDOWN @Hayesfawcett3!” with a screenshot of it.
Williams has also received support from Coleman and other Auburn commits, who have been trying to persuade him to join them on the Plains. Coleman tweeted “Come on home bro @ryanwms1” with a picture of them together at the Iron Bowl.
Williams has a tough choice to make, as he weighs his loyalty to Alabama, his childhood favorite, and his interest in Auburn, his potential new home. He will have to decide which school offers him the best opportunity to showcase his talents and achieve his goals.
Whatever he decides, he will have the attention of the college football world, as he is one of the most coveted prospects in the country. And he will have the admiration of the Auburn fans, who chanted for him to join the Tigers on Saturday night.
